Founder: Krishi Pandit Dr. Narayanbhai Chawda

Krishi Pandit Dr. Narayan Chawda is the founder of VNR Seeds and has been the backbone of the company ever since its inception in 1993.

Narayanbhai monitors every function of VNR Seeds right from research to production. Being a farmer himself, the VNR founder is acutely aware of the importance of good seeds and hence plays a hands-on role in various breeding practices and seed technologies used by VNR’s research and development unit to create high end products. He himself tastes all the vegetables & fruits for better selection of varieties.

After obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in Pomology from the Allahabad Agricultural Institute, Uttar Pradesh, Narayanbhai joined his father in vegetable cultivation and soon helped turn a modest self-sufficient farm into a profitable business.

He himself developed several varieties of seeds like the Gomchi Green (non season bound) bean, Suryarekha (wilt resistant) chilly, Gomchi Black pumpkin and VNR Katahi bitter gourd.

Narayan Chawda’s passion for agriculture and his knowledge gathered from study and experiment has earned him respect and fame. He is responsible for several initiatives in his field of work. To name a few, Chawda was the first to successfully cultivate disease-free potato in his belt in Chhattisgarh in 1976. The VNR founder also won the first prize in the All-India Rice Crop Competition for producing 11.9 tons of rice per hectare. He was awarded the title of Krishi Pandit by the government of India. In 1978, for the first time he started farm forestry in Chhattisgarh with Subabool Eucalyptus and Kapok plantations. He was also the first to use drip irrigation for vegetable farming in 1988 in Chhattisgarh.

In 1974, Krishi Pandit Chawda formed the Navin Beej Utpadak Sahakari Samiti. The aim of the society is to multiply production of acclimatized seeds for rice, potato and vegetables in Chhattisgarh and supply quality seeds and fertilizers and pesticides at reasonable rates to local farmers.

In January 2007, Narayanbhai was honoured with a doctorate (D.Sc.) by Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur. Apart from winning numerous awards for his achievements, Narayanbhai, who believes in sharing his knowledge and expertise, has also written extensively about agriculture and made several appearances on television and radio.
